Emerline Brooks Obituary

Ms. Emerline Brooks affectionately called, “Boot” was born in Abbeville County, SC on September 28, 1934 to the late Henry Washington Brooks and M. E. Heard Brooks.  She departed this life on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 in Brookhaven, GA. She was 89 years old. Emerline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was married to late William “Woody” Brooks for seventy-one years. She was educated in the Abbeville County School System and was a member of Washington Street Presbyterian Church. She worked at JS Wright High School for many years as a dietitian where she was known to give snacks out the side of the lunchroom. She also generously fed the children in the neighborhood with treats and snacks throughout the year. After retiring from Roswell Middle School, she continued to enjoy cooking, reading, traveling, and talking with her children daily. One of her favorite pastimes was reading her grandchildren’s Facebook posts to ensure they were not posting anything inappropriate. Oftentimes, she and her sister Mamie or her best friends, Gwen, Rita, and Tasha would visit small town stores and antique shops where they would ramble for hours. She would also spend her summers  visiting her brother and sister in the northeast.  She also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her sister Mamie. She was truly loved and will be sorely missed.

In addition to her husband and parents, Emerline was preceded in death by three children; Johnnie Mae Thomas, Henry Earl Brooks, and Carolyn Brooks; sisters, Amanda Hughes, Evelyn Cunningham, Beatrice Blount and Nellie Brooks; brothers, Jimmy Brooks and Henry Brooks.

Those left to cherish her most precious memories are her four daughters, Verdell “Neat” Brooks of Abbeville, SC, Wilhelmina Brooks Smith (Leroy) of Hephzibah, GA, Tami Brooks-Curd of Cummings, GA and Caroline Brooks of Abbeville, SC; three sons, Kenneth Brooks (Claudette) of Easley, SC, Gregory F. Brooks (Brenda) of Greenville, SC and Robert H. Brooks (Karen) of Greenville, SC; her big baby Tony Curd of  The Big A; four sisters, Mamie Brooks of Columbia, SC, Imogene Wardlaw (Steve) of Greenville, SC, Kathrine Farmer, of Philadelphia, PA and Ruth Harrison of Brooklyn, NY; one brother, Calvin Brooks (Dorothy) of Washington, DC, eighteen grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren, eight great-great  grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
