Ervin Roy Gilchrist Sr. was born on May 19, 1936, to Deacon Jake and Albertha Louise Robertson Gilchrist in Parksville, SC. He passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of those who knew him. He will be remembered as a gentle, humble man whose quiet strength, kind heart, and gracious spirit touched everyone he met.

At an early age, Ervin joined Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Parksville, SC. He graduated from Mims High School, class of 1954. After graduation, He moved to Detroit, MI, where he was previously employed by Ford Motor Company, and then was a member of the Mounted Security Officers of Detroit, MI. Ervin retired from the city of Detroit after 30 years of service. He had a passion for mentoring children and fostering a relationship between horses and children. His passion carried him to raise and tend to a few beloved horses, such as Fury and Jimmy Joe. He was a member of the CSRA Chapter 9th and 10th Calvary of The Buffalo Soldiers. He was also a member and Trail Master of the Happy United Horseman Club.

Ervin found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved tending to his garden, where his patience and care allowed beauty to flourish. He also enjoyed riding horses, a pastime that reflected his love of nature and the peaceful outdoors. His calm presence, warm smile, and lovely demeanor made others feel welcome and at ease. Above all, Ervin cherished his family and friends. He lived with humility, compassion, and integrity, leaving behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him, especially his children. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and in the countless lives he touched through his quiet generosity and gentle soul.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Jake and Albertha Louise Robertson Gilchrist, and two brothers, Robertson (Bob) Gilchrist (the late Lan Denise) and Stanley Gilchrist (the late Azelee).

Ervin’s precious memories will be cherished by his loving wife, Eleanor Moss Gilchrist, sisters: Eleather and the late Rev. James C. Williams, the late Rebertha (Bert) and James Patterson, and the late Geruther Gilchrist; his children: Darlene Michelle Gilchrist, Steven Roy Gilchrist, Ervin Roy Gilchrist Jr., and Gregory Moss (Frenchel); his grandchildren: Kuneka Gilchrist, Edith (Pierre) Greene, Noah Gilchrist, Nathaniel Gilchrist, Nia Moss, Noah Moss and Shameka Moss; and great-grandchildren; Phoenix Greene, Favor Greene, Pharaoh Greene, and Joshua Moss; his sisters-in-law and Judy Eanes: Vivian Adams (the late Sidney), Frenchton Moss (the late Franklin); and his brothers-in-law: Marshall Moss (Sarah), Carl Moss (Amelia), Donald Moss, (Laverne), York White (the late Alavan), the late Alfred and Wanda, and the late Patrick and Betty.
