Eugene Wallace Jordan, Jr., affectionately known as “Big Genie, Gene and Grandpa was born to Eugene Wallace Jordan, Sr., and Annette Berry Jordan on May, 4, 1930 in Harlem, New York.

He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at Mother Zion A.M.E. Church in Harlem, New York.  His grandmother encouraged him to be involved in the church.  He served as a Junior Usher.

 He was preceded in death by his parents:  Eugene Wallace and Annette Berry Jordan, his brother Floyd and his eldest son, Eugene Wallace Jordan, III.

After 92 years of life, Eugene Wallace Jordan, Jr., was called home on May 23, 2022 to be with his Lord and Savior.

Eugene was an innovative young man. He held his first job shining shoes at the tender age of 12 on Broadway in Manhattan, New York.  In 1947, he decided to join the Army National Guards.  Then, he was drafted by the Army.  While serving in the Army, he earned the rank as a Sergeant. He served until 1951. 

He was employed by the New York City Department of Sanitation for 21 years.  After retiring from the sanitation department, he worked for 25 years as a maintenance supervisor at the Roy Wilkins Community Park located in Queens, New York.

Eugene married Helen Lorraine Thomas on June 11, 1950.  Their union produced four children-Stephanie Annette (Gerald-Deceased) Deas, Eugene Wallace Jordan, III(Deceased)(Evelyn), Vance Thomas (Linda) and Kevin David (Kyle).

Gene and Helen moved from Harlem, New York in 1956 to St. Albans, New York to raise their four children. They resided in St. Albans for 63 years.  He and Helen relocated to McCormick, South Carolina in 2019.

Gene was a devoted father to his four children and a father figure to many youth in the community.  He was affectionately known in the community as “Grandpa”.  He was an avid softball player and fisherman who loved to coach his children and other youth in track and field, football, and softball.

Gene was very active in many community civic organizations.   He served for many years as the President of the 369th Veterans Association. Also, he was President of the 369th Rod and Gun Club and Commodore of Arverne Yacht Club.  He was awarded multiple awards and honors for his excellent leadership.

Eugene (Big Genie, Gene, Grandpa) will be missed by his ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, cousins, in-laws and a host of friends.
