Ophelia Mattison, a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, Godmother, cousin and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25th 2025 at the age of 84. She was born in McCormick, SC on May 13th 1941 to Amanda and JP Mattison Sr.

Ophelia was a devoted and loving mother to Marcy and grandmother to Phoenix and Skylar. She was known for her generosity, thoughtfulness and concern for everyone’s well being.

Ophelia worked at New York City Housing Authority for over 40 years. The City of New York recognized her for walking across the Brooklyn bridge to get to work from Brooklyn to Manhattan during a 12 day transit strike in 1980. She liked to sew, cook and decorate.

She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Marcy and Marcello Vega, her grandchildren Phoenix and Skylar Vega, her brother Eddie Lee Matterson, her niece and nephew in law, Sheila and Kevin Grady, her great niece, Sierra Grady her nephew Myron Matterson, her great nephews Derek, Kory and Almonese Matterson, her Goddaughters Melissa Gordon Glenn and Lisa Gordon, her great God grandson, Kerrington Glenn, and a host of cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Amanda and JP Mattison Sr., her sister Dora M Stewart, and her brother JP Mattison Jr.
